Synopsis

Han Sanming , a miner , came to Fengjie from Fenyang to look for his ex-wife who he had not met for 16 years . They saw each other by the Yangtze River. They decide to re-marry . Shen Hong , a nurse , came to Fengjie from Taiyuan to look for her husband who he had not returned to their hometown for two years . They embraced each other in front of Three George Dam . They danced and broke up sadly . They decided to divorce . The old town was already under the water. The new one was not yet finished. There were things to take with while there were also things to leave behind.

Set against the spectacular landscape of the Three Gorges region, Jia Zhangke's humane and moving Golden Lion winner tells two contemplative and compassionate stories of a man and a woman searching for absent spouses in Fengjie - an ancient town on the Yangtze River which is being demolished and will soon vanish for ever in the flooding caused by the controversial Three Gorges hydroelectric dam project. At the same time as offering a revelatory, thought-provoking portrait of people adrift in a world they no longer recognise, Still Life also reveals their energy, resilience and ability to reach new understandings.
