Synopsis

Adapted from the seminal novel by Nobel laureate Mo Yan that also inspired Zhang Yimou (1987) , starring Zhou Xun in her first television role in a decade. Jiu Er (Zhou Xun),  was a 19 years old poor girl who was sent by her father to be the wife of the leprotic son of a liquor seller. As Jiu'er's wedding party crosses a field of sorghum, they are attacked by a bandit, but is rescued by the brash Yu Zhan Ao (Zhu Yawen). The two embark on an illicit love affair, and together, they must contend with one hardship after another, including the Japanese invasion of their homeland.
